Art and Culture are intertwined. In order to preserve the Traditional Tamil Arts and Culture for a noble cause and to carry the art of Music, Drama, Dance, Painting, Sculpture to the younger generation through Music and Fine Arts Institutions, to co-ordinate implement various and cultural schemes and for the development of artistes involved in such arts, a separate department namely the Department of Art and Culture was formed in December’ 1991.

The various Government cultural organisations and art institutions that were functioning under the administrative control of different departments were brought under one umbrella. The Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram functioning under Public Department, the Tamil Nadu Ovia Nunkalai Kuzhu and Tamil Nadu Jawahar Siruvar Manram functioning under the Tamil Development Culture Department, the Government Music Training Centres functioning under the Education Department Government College of Arts and Crafts and Government College of Architecture and Sculpture functioning under the Directorate of Technical Education were also brought under the control of this department.

Hon’ble Minister for Industries,Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, Archeology, is the Pro Chancellor of this University.

Professor Dr. Premeela Gurumurthy, M.A. (Indian Philosophy). M.A. (Indian Music), Ph.D., was appointed as the Vice Chancellor by the Chancellor, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 31st of January, 2018. She was the President, Chairperson of the School of Music and Fine Arts and the Head of the Department of Indian Music, University of Madras after serving there from 1984 to 2014. She is not only an academician, but is also a vocalist of merit in Karnatic and Hindustani Classical Music.

Mission of the University

We strive for the development of music and fine arts and for the furtherance of the advancement of learning, along with research, documentation, publishing of audio, video recording and popularizing of all branches of music, fine arts and performing arts in the State of Tamil Nadu.

Location

The Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University is located at Adyar within the campus of the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, a heritage building known as the Brodie’s Castle, Dr.DGS Dinakaran Salai, Chennai-600 028, on the banks of the Adyar River. This University offers Postgraduate and M.Phil courses in Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mrdangam, Nagaswaram and Bharatanatyam, apart from M.F.A. in Painting and Visual Communication.
